Welcome!   Log-In   Register    Adopt   Foster   Rescue   Library   Volunteer!   About   F.A.L.O.

Welcome to our Rescue Section! In the Spring of 2002, we embarked on an ambitious program with the ultimate goal that 100% of the adoptable animals at the city shelter would be adopted. One of our efforts toward this goal is the Special Breeds Adoption program.

There are thousands of no-kill rescue organizations around the country that focus on particular breeds of dogs and cats. If an animal arrives at the shelter that we believe one of these organizations might be interested in, we contact them, arrange transportaion if necessary, and get the animal into rescue with that organization.

The successes we have achieved in just the first few months of this program are phenomenol! You will find lots of happy endings in this section.

If you are with a breed rescue organization and are interested in working with us, You can also send us your information by filling out one of our rescue applications - available both online and for download, in either Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format. Please check our links section, too, to make sure we have you listed there. And if you'd like to post your availability, you can do so in both our Forum and our Classifieds Section.

If you are interested in helping us with our rescues, there are many opportunities to do so. For example, Do you like short road trips? When we find new homes for the animals at the shelter at out-of-town rescue organizations, they must be transported to either Indianapolis or Cincinnati, where they are picked up by another pre-arranged volunteer for the next leg of the trip. If you would like to help with any of these transports, let us know!

Here are a couple of rescue happy ending stories:

A 3 yr old Pug was picked up by New Albany Animal Control and taken to the shelter. She had some health issues, so she wasn’t adoptable to the public. Her only chance to find her new home was through a rescue group. KY Pug Rescue was contacted and they saved this little girl. www.kentuckianapug.com

A 10 yr old Maltese was turned into the shelter by her owners. With her age she would have a hard time adjusting to the shelter environment and difficult for her to be adopted. A local rescue group, “Little Feet”, was contacted and they helped her find her forever home. www.petfinder.com

It’s just not local rescue groups that help these animals. Rescues located in IL, OH, TN, even as far as TX offer rescue assistance.

Gypsy: A Rescue Story

Gypsy, a 1 year old black lab/Rottweiler mix female, arrived at the shelter in early June. She had already had her share of puppies and obviously a hard life on the road.

She was very good with people, but didn't seem to like other animals at all. It was determined that she would need to be an 'only pet,' where she could get the love and training she needed to be a great dog. We knew she had a lot of love to give, but we also knew that because of her circumstances, it was unlikely that she would be adopted.
