![]() Click here to view a slide-show of the new shelter. One of our biggest successes to date has been the construction of the new, more humane city animal shelter in New Albany. Thanks to YOU, we were able to contribute nearly $440,000 toward its construction! Deteriorating Facilities Deterred AdoptionsPrior to construction of the new shelter, animals who were picked up as strays or abandoned by their owners were kept in extremely small and often un-safe conditions. And its small size made it difficult to keep many animals for any length of time. The deteriorating building where the animals were housed was a huge deterrent to potential adopters. It also made it difficult to recruit volunteers to care for the animals. The result, of course, was a very low adoption rate and the sad loss of many wonderful, adoptable friends. Our Furry Four-Legged Friends Found a Miracle in YOUThanks to the support of the many animal lovers in Floyd County, we now have a beautiful new Pet Adoption Center. The facility is clean and spacious, welcoming visitors, volunteers, and potential adopters into its sunlit lobby. Once there, visitors are greeted by the friendly faces of city's animal control employees and occasionally by volunteers who donate their time at the shelter. Potential adopters are now greeted by a full-time adoption coordinator who works hard to find good forever homes for the thousands of animals who pass through the shelter each year. The animals at the shelter now have more spacious and comfortable quarters. Small dogs and puppies have their own area, so they won't be intimated by larger dogs. Cats who are spayed or neutered and who are social are allowed to spend their time in the cat communal room - a large area with shelves and carpeted trees and toys to make the time go by more quickly while they wait for their forever homes. There is also a large food pantry, filled with high-quality dog and cat food, and an onsite laundry room to wash the many blankets donated by people like YOU. An education room allows for meetings and social events, as well as public presentations and classes. There is even an on-site clinic! As a result, we can now neuter or spay all animals before they go to their forever homes. Our ultimate goal is to find forever homes for 100% of the adoptable animals at the shelter. Thanks YOU, we are one HUGE step closer to that goal. |
